Graphic Match

This editing technique is used to create a strong link between two actions showing a relationship between the two shots. A graphic match is when two different but compositionally similar objects are cut together between two shots to create the effect of continuity between the shots allowing the film to run smoothly. The objects in the shot can be similar in shape and size or a similar kind of object.

An example of a graphic match is this scene is Psycho.

Another example is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
